Get to know
Edenton
May 31, 2008
Dear
Friends,
OK...the scare
is over! Sorry
about that. It
turns out that
your computers
are smarter than
we are! The
programs many of
you have don't
let folks know
if you are
opening your
emails. We have
had dozens and
dozens of "rave
reviews"
that indicate
you are alive
and well... and
definitely
opening our
emails. Thank
you for your
support. I will
continue to try
to make these
emails worthy of
your time.
Every now and
then we get what
we think is a
really bright
idea. (This one
is Lisa's.)
From time to
time we are
going to feature
great
restaurants,
attractions, and
places of
interest in and
around Rocky
Hock. Let us
introduce you to
"our Edenton."
Did you know
that Edenton is
billed as "The
South's
Prettiest Small
Town?" It was
the first
permanent
settlement in
North Carolina
and is often
referred to as
the ''mothertown''
of the State of
North
Carolina. It
was the original
capital of the
Colony of North
Carolina and the
home of the
Royal Governors.
Edenton even had
its own tea
party! In 1774,
over fifty of
Edenton's
leading ladies
(including the
wife of a
British tax
agent) signed a
pledge to cease
use of East
India Tea, thus
showing that
southern
merchants were
in accord with
their Boston
cousins in
opposing British
taxation. The
Edenton Tea
Party as it came
to be known was
one of many
colonial-era
events that
helped position
Edenton as one
of the most
important ports
on the east
coast. <www.edenton.com>
I strongly suggest
that you plan a
trolley or walking
tour of Edenton on
your next visit to
the Rocky Hock
Playhouse by
contacting Judy
Chilcoat at
252-482-2637. Our
local Chamber of
Commerce is one of
the best in the
nation. Be sure to
contact them at
(800) 775-0111 or
(252) 482-3400 to
get information and
details about this
beautiful community
that is home to the
Rocky Hock
Playhouse.
The Edenton
Coffee House is
one of the
newest eateries
in Edenton.
Owner Belinda
Baker offers a
lunch special to
Rocky Hock
Playhouse
patrons (call
ahead) for just
$4.95. This
includes a
sandwich, chips,
and a drink. The
restaurant has
fast become
known for its
gourmet coffees
and homemade
chicken salad
and pimento
cheese
sandwiches. They
also specialize
in Panini's
which are
grilled
sandwiches made
in an Italian
Panini press.
The restaurant
is located in
the heart of
historic
downtown Edenton
and also houses
Sister's Art
Gallery which
features the
work of local
artists. Sale
items include
paintings,
photographs and
handmade jewelry
and purses.
The Edenton
Coffee House
seats up to 50
people but
again, do call
ahead for
reservations.
